The mission of the Emergency Management Department is to provide a prepared and capable emergency management program for the City of Ogallala and Keith County through training, community education and preparedness by providing information and education to the general public, area emergency responders and volunteers. Emergency Management operations occur whenever a local government responds to any massive emergency such as tornado, wildland fire, flood, or other natural or man-made disaster.
Emergency Management is by function and by law a cooperative effort on the part of all levels of government and the private sector. At the local level, Emergency Management is concerned with the protection and education of the public from the hazards and risks that affect them.
Disaster management (or emergency management) is the creation of plans through which communities reduce vulnerability to hazards and cope with disasters. Disaster management does not avert or eliminate the threats, instead it focuses on creating plans to decrease the impact of disasters. Failure to create a plan could lead to damage to assets, human mortality, and lost revenue. Events covered by disaster management include acts of natural disasters, fire, hazardous materials incidents public disorder, communications failures and terrorism.
